FEATURED MINING COMPANY
FREEPORT MCMORAN COPPER & GOLD
SOUTH AMERICA
El Abra copper mine: is located in the El Loa province in the Second Region of Chile, 47 miles north of the city of Calama, on the southern side of Cerro Pajonal, at 3,900 to 4,100 meters above sea level,
in a desert environment with rainfall averaging less than one inch per year and is in an active seismic zone.
El Abra has leachable oxide and sulfide mineralization. The predominant oxide copper minerals are chrysocolla and pseudomalachite. The predominant primary sulfide copper minerals are bornite and chalcopyrite. There is a minor amount of secondary sulfide mineralization as chalcocite.
Cerro Verde copper mine: is located 20 miles southwest of Arequipa, Peru, the country’s second largest city. Cerro Verde is an open-pit copper and molybdenum mining complex. Spaniards mined high-grade copper oxide ore from Cerro Verde and shipped it to Wales in the mid-1800s. The predominant oxide copper minerals are brochanite, chrysocolla, malachite and copper “pitch.” Chalcocite and covellite are the most important secondary copper sulfide minerals. Chalcopyrite and molybdenite are the dominant primary sulfides.
INDONESIA
Grasberg copper and gold mine: is located in the remote highlands in the province of Papua, Indonesia, which is on the western half of the island of New Guinea. PT Freeport Indonesia markets its concentrates containing copper, gold and silver worldwide. The Grasberg mining complex is one of the world’s largest single producers of both copper and gold, and contains the largest recoverable reserves of copper and the largest single gold reserve in the world. Open-pit mining of the Grasberg ore body began in 1990. Open-pit operations are expected to continue until mid-2015, at which time the Grasberg underground mining operations are scheduled to begin. Grasberg is at the heart of a highly prospective minerals district, where ongoing exploration is providing opportunities to continue to add to our long-lived reserves. The workings comprise an open pit mine, an underground mine and four concentrators. The open pit mine – which forms a mile-wide crater at the surface – is a high-volume low-cost operation, producing more than 67 million tonnes of ore and providing over 75% of the mill feed in 2006.
Designed to be fully mechanised, using 6.2m3 Caterpillar R1700 load-haul-dump vehicles (LHDs) at the extraction level with a truck haulage level to the gyratory crusher, the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) block cave mine is one of the largest underground operations in the world.
After 2004, when the DOZ mine averaged 43,600 tonnes/day a second underground crusher and additional ventilation were installed to increase daily capacity to 50,000 tonnes.
Ore from both operations is transported by conveyor to centralized mine facilities, feeding a combined daily average total of some 225,000t of ore to the mill and 135,000t to the stockpiles.
Production equipment includes 30m3–42m3 buckets, a 170-strong fleet of 70t–330t haul trucks, together with 65 dozers and graders, with radar, GPS and robotics used in the mine’s state-of-the-art slope-monitoring system.
EVRAZ GROUP
RUSSIA
KGOK: is located approximately 140 kilometres from NTMK, in Sverdlovsk region. KGOK develops the Gusevogorskoye deposit of titanium magnetite ores that contain a vanadium alloy component, allowing production of high-tensile alloyed steel products.
