FEATURED MINING COMPANY

OIL SANDS MINING IN CANADA

The process of turning oil sand into crude oil begins with mining the resource. Because the oil sand in Syncrude’s leases is not deeply buried, surface mining is the most viable method of recovery.

Layers of muskeg and earth are removed first. Suitable soil materials are used in ongoing reclamation.
Beneath the muskeg is a layer of overburden, which is removed to expose the thick deposit of oil sand.
Large trucks and shovels remove the overburden and mine the oil sand.
The oil sand is trucked to crushers, where large chunks are broken down for transport via hydrotransport or conveyor to bitumen extraction facilities.

SUNCOR ENERGY CANADA

Steepbank and Milennium:  are mining operations, which are used to develop shallow oil sands deposits.
Only 20% of all oil sands are close enough to the surface to be mined. The reclamation process begins as soon as mining operations are completed.

SYNCRUDE CANADA LTD

Syncrude Canada: is a joint venture of oil and gas companies developing Athabasca oil sands properties in north-eastern Alberta, Canada. Operations include three separate mines: the Base, North, and Aurora mines. The operation is on eight leases totalling 258,000 hectares of property. The main plant site is located at Mildred Lake, 40 km north of Fort McMurray, and about 500 km northeast of Edmonton.

SHELL CANADA

The Muskeg River Mine: extracts heavy oil, called bitumen, from the oil sands of northern Alberta
As currently designed the Muskeg River Mine will recover 1.6 billion barrels of bitumen.  The Muskeg River Mine has a design capacity of 155,000 barrels per day (bpd) of bitumen, which, after upgrading, is ready for refining.

Shell also has approval for Muskeg River Mine Expansion and Jackpine Mine, which will eventually develop most of Lease 13.

In oil sands mining - oil sand ore - a mix of oil and sand, is excavated using trucks and shovels. The material is then mixed with warm water to separate the oil from the sand.

FREEPORT MCMORAN COPPER & GOLD

NORTH AMERICA

Morenci Mine: is located in Southeast Arizona, about 50 miles northeast of Safford. Morenci is a porphyry copper open-pit mine and processing facility. Morenci is one of North America’s largest producer of copper and one of the largest open-pit mines in the world. It is one of the world’s largest producers of copper cathode from SX/EW. Its operations pioneered the use of Global Positioning Satellite system technology and computer-controlled dispatching in its haul trucks, shovels and other heavy equipment.

Bagdad Mine: is located about 100 miles northwest of Phoenix.  Bagdad is an openpit copper mine and concentrator, with molybdenum by-products. The Bagdad Mine is a porphyry copper deposit containing both sulphide and oxide mineralisation. The predominant oxide copper minerals are chrysocolla, malachite and azurite. Chalcocite is the most common secondary copper sulphide mineral, and chalcopyrite and molybdenite are the dominant primary sulphides.
