FEATURED MINING COMPANY
EXXARO RESOURCES
Exxaro Resources (formerly part of Kumba Resources) is a large coal and heavy minerals mining company in South Africa. It is also the largest South African based mining company in the country. The company operates facilities and offices in Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia.
SOUTH AFRICA
Grootegeluk Coal Mine: is situated 25 km from Lephalale in South Africa’s Limpopo province.

This open-pit mine employs 2000 people and produces 18,8 Mtpa final coal products, using a conventional truck and shovel operation. This mine has an estimated minable coal reserve of 2800 Mt and a total measured coal resource of 4600 Mt, from which semi-soft coking coal, thermal coal and metallurgical coal can be produced.
Grootegeluk has the world’s largest beneficiation complex, where 8000 tons per hour of run-of-mine coal is upgraded in six different plants.
Some 14,8 Mt of annual production is power station coal, transported directly to Eskom’s Matimba power station on a 7 km conveyor belt in terms of the existing supply contract.
An additional 1,5 Mtpa of metallurgical coal is sold domestically to the metals and other industries on short-term contracts.
Namakwa Sands: undertakes the mining and beneficiation of heavy minerals. The operation is located on the west coast of South Africa and operates facilities at three separate sites.

The mine and the concentration plants are located at Brand-se-Baai, 385 km north of Cape Town.
Concentrate is transported to the mineral separation plant by truck.
The mineral separation plant is located at Koeknaap, 60 km from the mine. Here ilmenite, zircon and rutile are recovered before the products are transported to the smelter by rail.
The smelter is based close to Saldanha Bay, 150 km from Cape Town.
Namakwa Sands operates two furnaces where ilmenite is smelted to produce titanium slag and pig iron. The Namakwa Sands operation started in 1994 and is one of the largest mineral sand operations in the world. |
