ARCH COAL Inc.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

As the second largest coal producer in the United States, we utilise state-of-the-art equipment and advanced mining techniques. This maximises our efficiency in our mining operations in the three main low-sulphur, coal-producing regions:

Powder River Basin: Arch had sales volume of 132.4 million tons of coal in 2010  in the southern Powder River Basin in Wyoming, the nation’s largest coal-supply region. This tonnage is produced at Thunder Basin’s Black Thunder and Coal Creek Mines. Arch controls approximately 1.9 billion tons of reserves in the PRB.

Western Bituminous Region: In 2010, Arch sold 16.3 million tons of almost exclusively compliance coal from its operations in this region, which includes Colorado, Utah, and southern Wyoming. The company’s Western Bituminous operations include four large underground mines and one surface mine with a total of 455 million tons of proven and probable reserves.

Central Appalachia: Our operations in Central Appalachia are located in southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and Virginia. During 2010, these mining complexes sold approximately 12.6 million tons of compliance, low-sulphur and metallurgical coal. We control approximately 368 million tons of proven and probable reserves in CAPP.

KENNECOTT UTAH COPPER

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Utah Copper Co. Mill, Bingham Canyon, 1910

Bingham Canyon mine: is located near Salt Lake City, Utah.

Electric shovels can carry up to 56 cubic yards (43 m³) or 98 tons (89 t) of ore in a single scoop. Ore is loaded into a fleet of 64 large dump trucks which each carries 255 tons (231 t) of ore at a time; the trucks themselves cost about $3 million US each. There is a five mile (8 km) series of conveyors that take ore to the Copperton concentrator and flotation plant. The longest conveyor is 3 miles (4.8 km) long.

Kennecott’s Bingham Canyon Mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world, and is visible with the naked eye from space.

It is one of the top producing copper mines in the world with production at more than 18.7 million tons. Every year.

Rio Tinto purchased Kennecott Utah Copper in 1989 and has invested about $2 billion in the modernization of KUC’s operations. KUCC has also spent more than $350 million on the cleanup of historic mining waste and $100 million on groundwater cleanup.
